Initial Sydney Avan Group Meet and Greet

Saturday 1st July 2017
The inaugural Sydney Meet and Greet for the Avan Club went off with a bang! Twelve couples attended coming from diverse areas such as Engadine in the south, Hazelbrook in the mountains, Belrose in the north and to give special mention to Carol & Willy Hansen who trekked down from the Central Coast, and everywhere in between. We all were excited at the prospect of coming together as a Sydney group and the chatter over coffee was vigorous.
There were a number of others who also expressed interest but were unable to make it due to other commitments or who were still on the road coming back from the AGM in Denmark.
Those that attended this morning were:-
John & Valmay Bennett (Hazelbrook); Ross & Jill Collins (Belrose); Carol & Willy Hansen (Narara – Central Coast); John & Judy Harker (Engadine); Adrian & Kathleen LeGras (Engadine); Allan & Rosemary Mee (Erskine Park); David & Margaret Moncur (Wentworth Point); Mike & Kathy Nicolls (Blacktown); Ken & Cheryl Parrott (Sans Souci – soon to be Lake Munmorah!); Ken & Fran Postill (Heathcote); Michael & Christine Sales (Blacktown); Wayne & Georgina Young (Hazelbrook);
The general thought was to “get the ball rolling” as soon as possible and David and Margaret Moncur have volunteered to host our first Sydney gathering at Blackheath in the Blue Mountains 25-27th July. More info will follow very shortly as David and Margaret put together a programme.
Their infectious enthusiasm was certainly evident as David immediately rang Blackheath caravan park to test out availability. The idea of a cold July gathering in the mountains was no deterrent for this hardy enthusiastic group with most putting up their hands as being interested. Details will be sent to all Sydneysiders that we have email addresses for.
There is also a nucleus Sydney Ukele Group forming and we will be having our first Ukele group at the Blackheath July gathering – all welcome – particularly beginners.
Another idea put forward for a gathering this year was the Christmas lights in the Hunter Valley sometime in November staying at Cessnock caravan park. Although no one has yet offered to host this, there was talk this may eventuate from the July gathering. And about March 2018 Christine and Michael Sales are considering hosting a gathering at Little Beach up on the Central Coast.
So as you can imagine there was much interest and excitement amongst the chatter.
Judy Harker mentioned how people often like to get away even for a weekend or a few days to a favourite spot and this is usually solo and wouldn’t it be great if there was an informal way we could let others know eg We’re off to ……….on……….anyone want to join us? This idea was met with great enthusiasm and excitement and it was agreed amongst the group that they would all like to be on an email list where informal invites could be sent out. Anyone not at the meeting on Saturday who would also like to be included in this list please email me as we would love to include you. We decided the list would contain each person’s name, their suburb and email address with each person on the list having a copy.
These informal invites would be over and above Sydney group/other official Avan gatherings. The invitee would NOT be considered hosting an event, but just inviting friends along.
The group also felt the idea of a coffee get together was a lovely way of also meeting others and so we decided that once each school term would be ideal.
The next Sydney group coffee morning will be at Revesby Workers Club on Saturday 21st October 10am-12 noon. ALL WELCOME. Until things become a little more organised and we can get dates etc on the Avan Website and in the Avanner we will remind people of these coffee mornings by facebook.
This first Meet & Greet was a great success thanks to the enthusiasm of those who attended. We are all looking forward to getting to know more Sydneysiders as the group expands.
As we only have the email addresses of those who responded to this initial invitation, if you know of any Sydneysider Avan members please also let them know and ask them to email/contact us to be added to the list if they are interested.
Thank you.

The Sydney group had their 2nd Meet & Greet Coffee morning. among other things it was decided to have a name change. It was decided among the group that since Sydney also incorporated the Blue Mountains and also the Central Coast that a name that reflected this wider demographic would be more suitable.

We will be called in future The Greater Sydney Group.
